WHY we believe in the Discover Year
"Ultimately, all young people will make their own choices: no one can do this for them. But we can make it far more likely that they will be able to make good choices which provide them with a lifelong sense of well-being. We can offer them possibilities that fire their imaginations, guidance that encourages their highest aspirations, and a cultural
climate that inspires rather than demoralizes them. There is no young person who cannot be uplifted by this kind of attention. The path to purpose is available to everyone, and by helping all young people to find it, we ensure a hopeful future for the entire society."

The Path to Purpose
...Did you know
According to a recent Statistics Canada 10-year study, 93% of students changed career paths between the age of 17-25
14% of students entering Canadian universities drop out by the end of their first year
In the province of Ontario, 43% of students leaving high school intending on entering post-secondary education wait more than 4 months prior to starting university or college
78% of Canadian parents say 'happiness' is their ultimate life goal for their children
As tuition fees continue to rise and there is more and more discussion as to whether a post-secondary education is worth the investment, we at MentorU believe there is a significant need for an intermediary program that can help students maximize their investment in post-secondary education. University or college is no longer the place to "find yourself", but rather to gain skills and knowledge needed to pursue one's passions. The problem is that very few people have a clear sense of their true passions at the age of 18.
The concept of the "gap year" remains relatively undeveloped in Canada, but we believe that there has never been a better time to introduce a structured gap year as a stepping stone to post-secondary. Better understanding their own interests, values and aptitudes and connecting with a diverse group of other talented and motivated people is the key to unlocking students' unique potential - in post-secondary education and beyond. Our passion is helping young adults discover theirs.
